Brisbane NewFarm known as Jew Farm by locals
From the consecration of the Brisbane Synagogue in 1886 to the post-war exodus of the 1960s and 1970s, this report traces a century of Jewish residential, commercial and civic life clustered on the New Farm peninsula. It documents the heritage mansion Allawah (originally Inglenook), built in 1888 for merchant Leopold Solomon Benjamin; the Sabbath-walking logic that drew families to Brunswick Street and Merthyr Road; the philanthropic and refugee work of the Council of Jewish Women and the Guardian Society; and the affectionate local nickname "Jew Farm" recorded by Brisbane Jewish historian Jennifer Creese.
