Old Portuguese Jewish Building in Bentinck, Bathurst
""" Phil Harvey
This building stood in Russell Street near the western corner of Bentinck. It was built for John Hughes in the early 1830s and was apparently the first two story house in Bathurst. Years later the ground floor was converted into a shop and a balcony was added to the front. The second photo shows the house from the rear in 1873. """
"""David Lyon However, the Architecture for that building is clearly 'old Portuguese Jewish' and there are thousands of buildings exactly like that in old Jewish Quarters spread over Asia. That type of building came to Australia in the 1500's and 1600's with the expulsion of the Jews from Spain and Portugal. In Thailand, where the British did not conquer, the information is held in the Bangkok Museum of History in Bangkok. Sorry to say this but the British lied and the building in the photo wasn't alone.
